Very intense. And surprising. I honestly thought Morgana was going to free Merlin and runaway with him.

Oh, goodness. That was so wrenching, and beautifully done. It tugged at my heart strings like you wouldn't believe.

The overall setting of it- the basis that Arthur would react so furiously and without thought- really made this hit home. That, combined with his later guilt, made this oh-so bittersweet. There were so many lines that were just done gorgeously, expressing everyone's slow turn into hopelessness.

The ones the killed me the most were understated:

- “I’m sorry,” said Arthur, as Gaius turned to leave. But Gaius just turned and bowed stiffly.
“Your highness,” he said.
(Oh goodness this was brilliant, and Gaius' awkwardness was just...heartwrenching.)

-“I thought you weren’t going to come,” he said.
“I didn’t think you’d want me to,” said Arthur.
“Well, of course-” Merlin breaks off.
“I’m sorry,” said Arthur, after a moment of silence. “I really am. I didn’t think- I mean, I never thought he’d actually-”
“It’s alright,” said Merlin. “It’s not your fault. It’s Uther, and his stupid laws.”
“We’ve been trying to talk him out of it, but he won’t listen,” said Arthur.
“We?” said Merlin.
“Me, and Gaius, and… Morgana,” said Arthur.
“Morgana? Really?” and then Merlin smiles. “I didn’t know she cared.”
And that, for some reason, breaks Arthur’s heart. “I won’t let him do this,” he said. “I promise.”
“Don’t promise,” said Merlin. “I don’t think that’ll do any good. And then you’ll feel bad.”
(And this part. It just drives home Arthur's reaction, and Merlin. Guh, Merlin. And sorry, I copy and pasted the entire thing, because the entire thing was just that amazing.)

Oh, jeepers. It seems like I cannot stop gushing over how amazing this is. Much love to you for posting it. (Though, don't take this the wrong way, I hope this never actually happens in the series. It would KILL me.)

I think I've run across this little fic three times. Three times I've read it and enjoyed it, but I never reviewed. Shame on me. This is a very well crafted story. It's quite plausible. I'm always half afraid that if Merlin's secret doesn't get revealed in the right circumstances then Arthur's first reaction will be a loud, unthinking one.

"“Me, and Gaius, and… Morgana,” said Arthur.
“Morgana? Really?” and then Merlin smiles. “I didn’t know she cared.”

And that, for some reason, breaks Arthur’s heart.
“I won’t let him do this,” he said. “I promise.”
“Don’t promise,” said Merlin. “I don’t think that’ll do any good. And then you’ll feel bad.”"
Holy cow did you ever pack a punch with that little trio. Stunning and spectacular. Those lines are outright excellence.

I really enjoyed the slow journey of realization that Arthur takes to find his own guilt. Arthur's attempt to switch the sentence to a beheading was heartwrenching. I'm glad you had Gwen wait with Arthur, but not completely absolve him. You stayed true to the characters. In both the minute details and in the overall view, this is a fantastic story. Thank you for writing it. It's a great 'what if?'
